Utilization and Ordering of Imaging for the Physical Therapist in Colorado

Posted: March 23

The Colorado APTA Board Directors would like to make all Physical Therapists in the state aware of some inclusions in our practice act that may make it easier to manage your patients care.

On March 21st, 2014, the State Board of Physical Therapy issued the following policy;

“A licensed physical therapist may order or perform, with clinical justification, any diagnostic imaging which is within the recognized standards of the practice of physical therapy, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)”

You can access this yourself at this link.

Physical Therapists in the state of Colorado are able to order imagery studies when appropriately indicated. Importantly, most imaging centers know this and the majority of all insurances cover the right to do so. This important validation of our professional scope has been in place for almost three years now and it is available for implementation, making our jobs as direct access providers that much easier and beneficial to our patients.

Joint us April 22nd at the APTA Colorado Spring Conference for a panel discussion covering the appropriate use of imaging, how to manage the current barriers to imaging, how to implement your own imaging component in your practice, and case studies followed by a question and answer session to show how this can and is being done! Learn more about the Utilization and Ordering of Imaging for the Physical Therapist in Colorado Session.

Dr. Scott Rezac, PT, DPT

Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist

Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapist

Treasurer, Colorado Chapter of the APTA
