Last Chance To Pre-Register For The 2018 Annual Rocky Mountain Conference & PT Expo

Posted: October 18, 2018

Today is the last day to pre-register for the 2018 Rocky Mountain Annual Conference & PT Expo. Onsite registration will be available at the conference at a higher rate.

NEW EVENT - Come meet State Representative Jonathan Singer (D-Longmont) at a fundraiser hosted by APTA Colorado. Rep. Singer chairs the House Committee on Local Government, House Public Health and Human Services Committee, and the Joint Technology Committee. Rep. Singer was one of the sponsors of our PT Sunset bill and fought hard to make sure dry needling stayed in the scope of practice for a PT. He is also the sponsor of APTA Colorado's priority bill for the 2019 session allowing PTs to do "Return To Play" determinations. Rep. Singer is incredibly thoughtful and wonderful to work with.

Please join us in supporting a champion of physical therapy. Friday, October 26, from 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM , in Piney Room B.

This Saturday Is 2018 PT Day of Service!

Posted: October 11, 2018

Consider celebrating NPTM (National Physical Therapy Month) by participating in the 2018 PT Day of Service that takes place on this Saturday, October 13. APTA is a proud partner of PT Day of Service, a global event founded by physical therapists in 2015. Whether you are hosting an NPTM event, volunteering at a pro bono clinic, or serving the community by cleaning up a park, you’ll be joining with PTs, PTAs, and students of physical therapy across the world who are actively making a difference in their communities on or around that day.

Learn more by visiting http://www.apta.org/NPTM/.
National Physical Therapy Month

Americans continue to be prescribed and to misuse opioids at alarming rates. This October, APTA will carry on raising awareness of physical therapy as a safe and effective alternative to opioids for treatment of chronic pain conditions via its award-winning #ChoosePT campaign.

You can learn about #ChoosePT and find ways to support APTA's efforts locally by visiting the online campaign tool kit.

Here are some ideas to help you get started:

  • Follow @MoveForwardPT on Twitter and Facebook, and "like" and share our #ChoosePT posts and graphics.
  • Share the public service announcements "Treating Pain Takes Teamwork" and "Choose Physical Therapy for Safe Pain Management" on your website and social media pages.
  • Offer to assist APTA's public and media relations staff with placing the TV and radio public service announcement in your community. Contact [email protected] for step-by-step instructions.
  • Download and distribute the Patient Pain Profile at your facility or community events.
  • Host a session for other health care providers to learn about a physical therapist's role in pain management.
  • Advocate for the valuable role of physical therapy in improving patient outcomes and combatting the existing opioid crisis. Access APTA's white paper, "Beyond Opioids: How Physical Therapy Can Transform Pain Management to Improve Health."
  • Present to the public, payers, and other health care professionals about a physical therapist's and physical therapist assistant's role in pain management. Access "The Opioid Epidemic: What PTs and PTAs Need to Know" document.
  • Take #ChoosePT on the road by wearing a #ChoosePT shirt or holding a #ChoosePT sign (available in the toolkit) and take a photo of you showing your #ChoosePT pride. This could be at a landmark, park, mountaintop, and anywhere in between. Post them to social media using the #ChoosePT hashtag or email them to us at [email protected]. We'll share our favorites throughout October.

The Sky’s the Limit: Revolutionizing Geriatric Rehabilitation Practice and Outcomes Recording Available

Watch 'The Sky’s the Limit: Revolutionizing Geriatric Rehabilitation Practice and Outcomes' webinar recording with speaker Jennifer Stevens-Lapsley, MPT, PhD. The webinar discusses the onset of post-acute care reform has created an environment for physical therapists to transform clinical practices and be more effective at improving function in medically deconditioned patient populations in shorter episodes of care. Evidence suggests implementing programs focused on mobility throughout the day combined with high-intensity rehabilitation interventions (low repetitions, high weight) produces greater functional gains and can be accomplished in less time than lower-intensity interventions (high repetitions, low weight). This presentation will describe some of the barriers to implementation along with practical strategies to implement higher intensity interventions. The content is relevant to clinicians treating medically complex patients in a variety of settings (e.g acute, skilled nursing, home health, and outpatient). Sign up to receive the recording.

Sports Medicine Clarity Act Going to the President!

Posted: October 4, 2018

This afternoon the U.S. Senate passed on a vote of 93-6 a 5-year reauthorization for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).  Included in the FAA reauthorization, was APTA-supported language from H.R. 302/S. 808, the Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act. The legislation is now headed to President Trump for signature.

This legislation will provide professional liability and coverage protections and portability for physical therapists, physicians, athletic trainers, and other licensed health care professionals who practice across state lines as they travel with professional and collegiate teams or other athletes and teams sanctioned by a national governing body.  The bipartisan legislation was introduced in the House by Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-KY) and Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA), and in the Senate by Senator John Thune (R-SD) and Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).

As you know, this has been a key piece of legislation that APTA and our members have actively advocated in support of for several years. Thank YOU for all of your hard work, dedication, and advocacy on this important legislation.  Without your advocacy, none of this would have been possible. Great job!
