Session in the Spotlight: Best Practices in Community Health Promotion Speaker: Dawn Magnusson, PT, PhD Rates of chronic, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease are on the rise, and have supplanted acute, infectious diseases as the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. NCDs are largely preventable through the promotion of healthy behaviors, however, the strongest predictors of individual health behaviors and by extension NCDs, are our social and physical environments – where we live, work, learn, and play. Physical Therapists are increasingly engaging in community health promotion efforts, yet they receive little formal training in the development of community-based programs. This educational session is intended for students, clinicians, and researchers interested in discussing best practices in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of community-based programs.
