Tricare to Offer Free Physical Therapy For Colorado Patients With Back Pain

Beginning Jan. 1, Tricare beneficiaries in 10 states will have access to free physical therapy sessions for lower back pain, Military.com reports.
Defense Health Agency officials announced Tuesday that effective next year, military family members and retirees and their families who use Tricare can get up to three physical therapy treatments for their pain.
The pilot program, set for Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia, will run through Dec. 31, 2023.

Meet the Joanne Posner-Mayer Endowed Chair in Physical Therapy
Michael Harris-Love named first endowed chair of Physical Therapy Program
Michael Harris-Love, PT, MPT, DSc, who became the head of the University of Colorado School of Medicine Physical Therapy Program last year, describes himself as an “unlikely candidate” for physical therapy school, CU Anschutz Today reports.
For six years, he worked to save money for his education while attending community college. Along the way, he changed majors several times. “Generally speaking,” he said, “having few financial resources and a host of eclectic interests is not a recipe for academic success.”
Harris-Love worked as a computer-aided design and manufacturing technician at a Motorola plant in Arizona. During that time, he would visit the company library during lunch to read about other careers. Physical therapy sparked his interest, so he began logging volunteer clinical service hours needed to apply to most PT schools.

Participate in National Physical Therapy Month
October is National Physical Therapy Month, a celebration for the profession and an opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of physical therapy and physical therapists’ role as movement experts. This year, APTA is highlighting the many essential health benefits of regular physical activity and the transformative role PTs and PTAs play in helping Americans get or keep moving. The focus on physical activity amplifies our latest ChoosePT public awareness campaign, launched in July, to address the prevalence of inactivity among Americans. APTA encourages Americans to choose more movement to prevent or improve many chronic conditions and reduce the risk of some cancers, and improve bone health, cognitive function, weight control, and quality of life.
Amid a pandemic, this year’s NPTM celebrations may not be the same as in past years. In-person celebrations may be canceled or more socially distant. AIM Clinical Guidelines for Rehabilitative and Habilitative Services
AIM Clinical Guidelines for Rehabilitative and Habilitative Services will be published 12/1/2020. Due to the continuity of care aspect of considering episodes that may start before the transition, we will be instituting a grace period for 12/1/20 – 12/31/20. That means any requests started prior to 12/5/20 will follow the current request process. Starting on 12/6/20 providers will be asked to enter some outlier service codes independently as they will require additional review. All decisions made on or after 12/6/20 will be based on the AIM Clinical Guidelines, however the Anthem claims system will maintain the grace period until 12/31/20 for the outlier service codes.
