Volunteers Make APTA Possible

So, you're inspired to help the association, the profession, your patients, and yourself by volunteering. Where do you begin? APTA Engage is an online portal for finding and posting volunteer opportunities large and small, on national and local levels.

To start, choose "Opt In" on the APTA Engage home page, and create a member profile. This helps the association know what kinds of opportunities you're interested in. If you choose to, you'll receive email alerts when an opportunity that seems a good fit becomes available. But you don't have to wait for an alert: Review the Volunteer Opportunities List to see where help is needed. Click on an opportunity to learn more and apply.

You may hear of an opportunity outside of APTA Engage — often APTA and its components will publicize a volunteer activity through news, other emails, in APTA Magazine, and elsewhere. If the notice asks for you to sign up via APTA Engage, log in and search for the opportunity or use the link provided in the notice.

Find APTA Engage at engage.apta.org.

Impact of COVID-19 on Physical Therapy Profession

The physical therapy profession has not looked the same since the COVID-19 pandemic began to affect the United States in March. Many have seen, and continue to see, reductions in hours and income. Use of telehealth and other video-based consultation has increased, but in-person care remains more common and preferred. Many PTs and PTAs are facing increased financial hardships, although the pandemic is more likely to have increased career pride than decreased it.

APTA Releases 2020 State Legislative Report

The 2020 legislative session was one for the history books. Most state legislatures adjourned abruptly as the COVID-19 crisis spread in the spring, and many held special legislative sessions during the summer and fall to wrap up unfinished business and address substantial revenue shortfalls stemming from the pandemic.

As states implemented restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19, governors, state health departments, licensure boards, and commercial, federal, and nonfederal insurers issued emergency rules and regulations that expanded the ability of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants to provide therapy services via telehealth. Additionally, emergency rules were issued both by the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services and by many states to provide for payment of physical therapy and other healthcare services delivered via telehealth by Medicare, state Medicaid programs, and commercial insurers.

As a result of COVID-19-related shutdowns, many bills and final regulations planned for the 2020 session were put on hold. However, state chapters also scored valuable legislative wins on direct access, fair copays, telehealth, the Physical Therapy Compact, practice act updates, and more.
