This course is sponsored by the APTA Colorado Pediatric SIG. T he course will cover theoretical and clinical evidence on the importance of attending to the parent-child relationship during pediatric physical thera py practice. We will explore the intertwined relationships between motor an d social emotional development, provide evidence for the role of the parent -child relationship from birth to three on children’s development, and high light the implications of childhood disability on the parent-child relation ship. We will then provide suggestions and practical applications of parent -child relationship focused intervention to enhance pediatric physical ther apy practice, children’s global development, and family well-being.< /p>

a. Participants will verbalize the significance of
the parent-child relationship regarding the development of self-regulation
with an emphasis on the importance of self-regulation to sensory motor dev
elopment.

parent-child relationship concerns in the caregivers and children they serv
e.
c. Participants will apply specific infant
mental health informed physical therapy treatment strategies to promote ear
ly dyadic relationships, facilitate more neuro-typical developmental trajec
tories, and enhance regulatory capacities for children receiving physical t
herapy services.
d. Participants will be intro
duced to reflective consultation and demonstrate an understanding of the im
portance of engaging in reflective consultation due to the challenging and
emotional nature of infant mental health work.
