Course Description: This presentation will cover the diagnosis, causes and comorbidities associated with failure to thrive, otherwise known as weight faltering. A focus of the presentation will include the role of the pediatric physical therapist in evaluating and treating developmental delays resulting from/associated with failure to thrive. Core knowledge on the diagnosis will be applied to a case example.1 CE Offered! 

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish the different causes/classifications of failure to thrive
  • Identify the diagnostic criteria including common signs and symptoms of failure to thrive
  • Identify common diagnoses associated with failure to thrive
  • Understand the role of a physical therapist in the multidisciplinary team treating the developmental consequences of a child with failure to thrive


Speaker: Darby Leavengood

Darby Leavengood is the Pediatric Physical Therapy Resident at The University of Colorado. She discovered her passion for pediatric physical therapy at 16 years old as a result of a high school internship. In pursuit of her career goals, Darby earned her Bachelor of Science in Sports Conditioning and Training with a minor in American Sign Language from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. She then went on to receive her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Florida International University. During her graduate education she participated in a case study titled The Effects of Early Intervention Using Sensory Stimulation with Motor Training to Improve Functional Mobility in a Child with Myelomeningocele: A Case Report. She looks forward to continuing her career as a pediatric physical therapist in the Denver Metro area once she has completed her residency.
