We have come a long way from locked knee KAFOs and stiff AFOs that provided limited outcomes and poor results. The awareness and utilization of this new technology will provide more options to consider when working with complex lower extremity orthotic patients in order to maximize outcomes. This seminar will cover lower extremity orthotics including AFOs, KAFOs, Stance Control Orthosis (SCO), and Swing Stance Control Orthosis, (SSCO). Also included, information on carbon fiber designs and addressing complex lower extremity rotational deformities. We will also discuss the C-Brace, the first microprocessor KAFO designed to provide a new level of safety with an enhanced natural gait. The course will provide an understanding of the requirements necessary in order to activate Stance Control and Swing Stance Control orthoses and how to optimize patient strengths to achieve positive results. The course will provide therapy suggestions for providing increased safety, stability and activation of the system according to patient needs and system requirements.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify complex lower extremity rotational deformities and appropriate orthotic design to manage those deformities
  • Understand the benefits of carbon fiber designed orthoses and comparisons to current technology
  • Determine patient candidates for Stance Control as well as Swing and Stance Control patients
  • List three types of Stance Control activation and understand what each type requires for occurrence
  • Differentiate between the gait phases and how the C-Brace® System is working respectively
  • Design an individualized gait training based on physical findings of the user and the technical possibilities the C-Brace® System offers
  • Instruct the patient how to walk with the System and operate it in different activities (motion control)
  • Describe the likelihood of outcomes for the patient
