Course Title: Strategies to Overcome the Barriers to Early Physical Rehab in the Intensive Care Unit

Course Description: Early rehabilitation provided in the intensive care unit has been shown to produce improved functional outcomes and is both safe and feasible if administered properly by an experienced physical therapist.  Why then, is it so difficult for physical therapists to provide this service for our patients in the ICU?  In this session, participants will explore both clinical and cultural barriers to providing physical therapy rehabilitation for patients in the intensive care unit. Case based discussions framed around a critically ill patient who is mechanically ventilated and a patient with a subarachnoid hemorrhage who is neurologically compromised will provide the foundation for exploration, discussion and creation of strategies to overcome these clinical and cultural barriers.
