This course meets Colorado standards for 8 hours of Category I Professional Development Activity.

Description: High-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust manipulation of the cervical spine is an integral skill for all physical therapists who treat patients with neck pain and headaches. This course is designed to help therapists and students who are not currently comfortable with these interventions. Therefore, we will cover only 3 techniques to ensure that participants gain a mastery in these skills. This lab course will be designed to maximize hands-on practice with a short lecture and group discussion component. During the lab, participants will have expert supervision and guidance from multiple Fellows of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists and other therapists with advanced training in manual therapy.

Target audience: PT's, 3rd year PT students

Objectives for participants:

  • Demonstrate competence with 3 HVLA thrust techniques for the cervical spine.
  • Leave the course feeling confident using cervical manipulation on Monday.
  • Understand the indications and contraindications for HVLA thrust manipulation.
  • Become aware of the research relating to the safety and efficacy of cervical manipulation.

Cost: APTA CO Members:$200; APTA CO Non-Members: $250; Students $75
