Description: It could be argued that “breathing” and “breathing exercises” are likely one of the first techniques a physical therapy student are taught in class, yet it is often “let go” in favor of trending and emerging treatments. In recent years, however, a growing body of literature has shown the powerful effect of breathing, proper breathing, on pain, dysfunction and overall well-being of patients. Specific to neuropathic pain, it is now well described that increased oxygen and blood flow around the nervous system is associated with a decrease in sensitization of the nervous system, while decreased blood flow and oxygen is associated with an increase in sensitization of the nervous system. This event will present current and emerging tests and measures for the respiratory system. Followed by an interactive hands-on  portion that will integrate cervical, thoracic spine and ribcage manipulative strategies and specific breathing techniques with the goal to improve respiration and to calm a sensitive nervous system. The participants will leave the session with tools to immediately optimize recovery in clinical practice.
